What is the difference between Resin Open Source and Resin Professional?

Resin is provided in two versions, Resin Professional and Resin Open Source. Resin Professional adds features and enhancements commonly needed in a professional production environment. Resin Open Source is suitable for hobbyists, developers, and low traffic websites that do not need the performance and reliability enhancements of Resin Professional.

For technical details, go to Features Overview.

How much does Resin Professional cost?

Resin Professional costs $500 per CPU (up to 4 cores) for production/deployment. Caucho offers custom license packages for CPU's over 4 cores.

Resin Professional is free of charge for development, testing and QA for licensed customers. Both Resin Open Source and Professional provide developers access to the source code.

Resin Professional includes one year of version upgrades and bug fixes. After the initial year, Caucho uses a subscription model for continued version upgrades and product support.

How do I get an evaluation license?

Please contact sales@caucho.com or call (858) 456-0300 for a 60 day evaluation license.

Is technical support included with my license?

Resin licenses do not include technical support. However, we offer several technical support options to fit your support and budget needs as described below.

Technical support options

Caucho offers several support options to meet the needs of your enterprise. Technical support is handled by Caucho engineers and not outsourced. When you contact us for a support issue, you receive a fast response directly from our engineers who write the code. Any developer, systems administrator or staff member within your company will be able to use your Caucho support contract, there is no need for one point of contact. This leads to a rapid response time and highly efficient support experience.

Platinum priority email support costs $3000 per year for up to 10 CPU's and includes one business day turnaround. It can be used for development, testing and production/deployment. Platinum is an excellent cost-efficient support solution.

Resin Total Care includes expanded priority level telephone and email support. Total Care costs $15,000 per year for up to 10 CPU's. It can be used for development, testing and production/deployment.

24x7 support is available.

For questions regarding the above support options or custom solutions, site licenses, large deployments or special enterprise needs, please contact Steve Montal at (858) 456-0300 or sales@caucho.com.

Does Caucho provide Professional Services and Training?

Yes. Caucho Professional Services and Training are available onsite and remotely in every continent. For details, contact Caucho Sales or call (858) 456-0300.

I am evaluating Resin Professional. Is there presales support available?

Yes. Please email presales@caucho.com with your questions and include "presales" on the subject line. If you have an urgent presales issue, please call (858) 456-0300.

How do I get a formal quotation for Resin Professional and technical support?

Please contact sales@caucho.com or call (858) 456-0300. We will send you a quotation within one business day. If it is urgent, please let us know and we will expedite the quotation request.

What operating systems (OS) do you support?

Resin supports most operating systems including Windows, Linux, Mac/Unix, and Solaris. If your company is running a specific OS such as HPUX, for example, contact us so that we can confirm if Resin supports your operating system.

Does Caucho offer discounts for non-profits or startups?

We offer discounts to non-profits and small startups when there is a financial limitation involved. Please contact Caucho Sales or (858)456-0300 and we will work with you to meet your budget needs.

What is the licensing policy for virtualization? Do I pay per OS image or just for the total physical CPU?

You pay for licensing physical CPU's only and do not pay for virtual servers.

Can you define deployment/production environments?

Deployment and production environments are defined as physical CPU's running Resin for Internet or Intranet sites. You need to purchase licenses for the specific number of CPU's of your deployment/production environment at $500 per CPU.

Is there a license fee for Resin when it is deployed in a hot/warm DR (disaster recovery) or standby facility?

Yes. Contact us at (858) 456-0300 or sales@caucho.com and we will be work with you on a licensing plan specific to your DR environment.

I have a Resin license. Will it stop running after it expires?

The license activates any version of Resin from the past, and any future version of Resin up to one year from the issue date of the license.

When the license expires (one year has passed), your old versions continue to function. The license expiry stops you from upgrading to newer versions of Resin.

The advantages of purchasing an annual subscription include:

  • the ability to upgrade versions. Caucho releases a new version approximately every ten weeks
  • to have access to new Java specifications, functionality and reliability features
  • a reduced cost compared to having to purchase a new license at some future date without having a history of renewal through our subscription program
  • support plans available from Caucho

  • What is the Caucho Annual Subscription?

The Caucho Annual Subscription is designed for existing customers to continue receiving version upgrades and bug fixes after their initial one year license term expires. This is critical to many developers given the continuous release of new Java specifications and performance features. Subscriptions must be purchased within 60 days of the end of the license period in order to take advantage of the discounted rates.

Subscriptions cost $300 per CPU (up to 4 cores) and provide continued version upgrades, new features and bug fixes for one year. Customers are able to renew their Platinum or Total Care technical support contracts along with their subscription.

Each time Resin is deployed on a new CPU, you must purchase an additional licenses.

Given the continuous updates to Java specifications and protocols, Caucho highly recommends participating in the Caucho Subscription Program, where you will receive continuous upgrades to ensure that your deployment has optimal performance, security and stability.

Will I be notified when my licenses are expiring?

Yes -- you will receive notification from the Caucho Subscription Program by email approximately 30-45 days before your licenses expire. Sometimes these notices are spammed out. In case you do not receive a notice, please contact sales@caucho.com or call (858) 456-0300.

My company has changed address or contact person. Does Caucho have my updated information?

Please call (858) 456-0300 or email sales@caucho.com to confirm that your contact information is up to date.

My license has expired. Can I install a new version of Resin?

No. You need to purchase a subscription to continue receiving version upgrades, feature requests and bug fixes.

What payment options do you have?

Caucho accepts payment by credit card (Visa, MasterCard or American Express), check (payable in a United States bank) and bank wire transfers.

Can I use Resin Open Source for a commercial deployment?

Yes - Resin Open Source can be used for commercial deployment free of charge as long as you maintain the terms of the GPL license.

Do you have an online store?

Yes. Visit the Caucho Online Store to order by credit card.

    Do you accept Purchase Orders?

Yes. Download the Resin Order Form from sales page and FAX it to (858)777-3636 or email it to sales@caucho.com.

Resellers - Information and Order Forms

Download the Caucho Reseller Form [MS Word] [PDF] and FAX it to (858) 777-3636 or email it to sales@caucho.com.

What do I receive after my order is complete?

The purchasing and engineering contacts listed in your order will receive a license certificate, product registration key and an invoice. You can always add or remove contacts from our database by contacting sales@caucho.com.

Where do I download Resin? What versions are available for download?

All publicly available versions are listed on our download page. Bug fixes and feature requests are made to the latest version of Resin only.

I don't see the version that I need on your download page. What should I do?

This means that the version you are looking for has been archived and is no longer available. We recommend using the latest release of Resin or contacting sales@caucho.com for version archiving history.

My company purchased Resin years ago. How do I know if our licenses are current?

Contact us at (858) 456-0300 or sales@caucho.com. We will need the following information:

  • License number (if you have this available)
  • Number of servers and CPU's per server running Resin

  • Can I transfer my license to another name or company?

Yes. Contact us at and we will be glad to take care of this for you.

My company did not renew years ago and now we want to deploy a more recent version of Resin Professional. What should we do?

Contact us and we will work with you to ensure that your Resin configuration is up to date and compliant.

Note -- all deployments of Resin Professional must have valid licenses and are enforced by the Caucho Software Compliance Program (CSCP). If you have a question about your company licensing history, contact us to avoid license violations. If your company does not participate in the Caucho Subscription Program, there is a possibility that servers have been added and you are violating the licensing terms.

I am new to my company and Resin was set up years ago. I didn't realize that Resin needs to be licensed. What should I do now?

Contact us and we will review your company history to set up your licensing properly.

Who do I contact at Caucho with accounting related questions (accounts payable/accounts receivable/OEM reporting)?

Contact Ellen Williams at ellen@caucho.com or by telephone at (858) 456-0301.

What is Quercus? Is it included as part of Resin?

Quercus is a pioneering open source Java/PHP architecture for web applications and services that is included as part of Resin for no additional fee.

Quercus is an open source 100% Java implementation of the PHP 5 language built into Resin application server - there is no additional download/install. Developers using Resin can launch PHP projects without having to install the standard PHP interpreter as Quercus takes on the role of the PHP engine. With Quercus, PHP applications automatically and immediately take advantage of Resin's advanced features including connection pooling, distributed sessions, load balancing, and proxy caching.

Quercus implements PHP 5 and a growing list of PHP extensions including APC, iconv, GD, gettext, JSON, MySQL, Oracle, PDF and Postgres. Many popular PHP applications will run as well as, if not better, than the standard PHP interpreter straight out of the box. The growing list of PHP software certified running on Quercus includes DokuWiki, Drupal, Gallery2, Joomla, Mambo, Mantis, MediaWiki, Phorum, phpBB, phpMyAdmin, PHP-Nuke, Wordpress, and XOOPS.

Quercus presents a new mixed Java/PHP approach to web applications and services where Java and PHP is tightly integrated with each other. PHP applications can choose to use Java libraries and technologies like JMS, EJB, SOA frameworks, Hibernate, and Spring. This revolutionary capability is made possible because 1) PHP code is interpreted/compiled into Java and 2) Quercus and its libraries are written entirely in Java. This architecture allows PHP applications and Java libraries to talk directly with one another at the program level. To facilitate this new Java/PHP architecture, Quercus provides an API and interface to expose Java libraries to PHP.

Quercus and Quercus' PHP libraries are written entirely in Java, thereby taking the advantages of Java applications and infusing them into PHP. PHP applications running on Quercus are simply faster, easier to develop, more capable, more secure, and more scalable than any other PHP solution.
